I had been trying different wireless headphones since years. None of the sets that I purchased fulfilled my expectations. I was looking for great sound, good isolation (so that too much of ambient noise doesn’t reach my ear) and simple operation.
2 types of wireless headphones are there namely radio and infrared. Infrared devices need earphones as well as transmitter to be line-of-sight. For giving reliable performance, one device should see the other device. Infrared devices tried by me when all of them worked great had sound quality that was inferior. Radio devices functioned of different available bands for the consumer devices. Neither of them was really free from interference and they had scratchy or static sound. Hence, going in the expectations of mine were not very high.
Sennheiser has the reputation for designing great sound devices. I have invested decades as an audio engineer and came across Sennheiser microphones that were truly the best. I had also made use of Sennheiser wired headphones but found that they had great sounding but were highly rugged. The past experience of mine is what has excited me as soon as I discovered Sennheiser RS 170 Digital Wireless Headphone having Surround Sound and Dynamic Bass.
Setup- Quick start guide that comes with this device isn’t having sufficient information. I followed every piece of information like plugging in audio, inserting batteries, and charging headphones for nearly 14 hours. Even I lifted these headphones from the cradle of theirs that looks pretty nice as well as secure for the headphones and placed them on. There wasn’t any sound. I cross checked all connections on my multimedia receiver’s back part and they were fine. Then I began digging. RS 170’s is available with CD that is the user manual. When I read that, I looked OK. There are small green lights present on the earphones and charger that blinked but went out. Instruction manual included no details about what the lights actually meant.
It looked as if the fault was from my end. Tape monitor results on receiver of mine did not send the audio. I also plugged base unit into the music player which was done without fuss. Finally I received wonderful sound. Hence, the moral of the story is that simply follow the quick setup and you can enjoy your music, considering that you have connected the transmitter to live sound source.
One semi-confusing part of setup is there. AC adapter out from the package is not having any AC plug. It means that varieties of plugs for different countries have been provided. The plugs are situated in one of the many small boxes that come with this package. I literally was hunting for them so as to find them. As soon as I got them, correct plug would simply click into place on AC adapter and this is it!
Sound- The primary reason as to why anyone should purchase these headphones is their great sound quality. Sennheiser RS 170 Digital Wireless Headphone live-up to reputation of Sennheiser. They come in absolutely brilliant quality. There are highs present and distortion isn’t there. They come with realistic bass and are adequate, at least for me. Their so-called surround sounding feature will add some bit of extra ambience as if one is listening to speakers in a concert hall but actually no real surrounding sense.
Their range is good. I was able to get the best quality even when I was many rooms away from this transmitter. I was not trying to find the limits. The main usage of mine was listening in bed so that I can listen to music without disturbing my spouse when she is watching TV.
One situation is there when these Sennheiser headphones can pose issues. When individuals are listening music using their headphones and others are listening to speakers present in same room, you’ll hear speakers (faint sound will be there because headphones come with great acoustic isolation) for fraction of seconds before one actually hears sounds in their headphone. It is because of delays in the digitizing of signal and finally converting them back into analog signal in headphones.
This delay can also be assumed as that of sound quality. Sennheiser makes use of much high quality system for digitizing as well as transmitting signals. One can hear the results easily.
Leatherette earpads are significantly comfortable and offer great seal; however, I mudded my set by making use of stretchy thin fabric intended for usage as insect screen as well as placed this on the parts that contacted by head. Ears of mine were able to breathe somewhat more easily as well as I was able to listen better. As an alternative, Velour earpads are there. These are for RS180 but they fit RS170 as well. I being practically minded person was happy at finding that these headphones were powered by umbiquitous AAA-sized batteries pair that will be simple to replace when time comes. I am indeed confident that there will be other accessories available in near future because Sennheiser obviously knows the value of their post-sales support when it is related to spare parts.
You can term these headphones costly but they are worth their cost. I don’t think individuals would find anything much better. The sound of these headphones is as good as the wired pair. One cannot give more praises than this.
